License
Contextator is free software under the GNU Affero General Public License, version 3 or later. Use it, read it, change it, run it for anyone — on one condition: what you build on it stays free too. A modified version that people reach over a network owes them its source. Contextator cannot be quietly closed.
In short
- You may run the software for any purpose, study and modify it, and redistribute it or your modified version.
- If you distribute it — as source, as a binary, as a container image — the recipients get the complete corresponding source under this same license, with your changes included.
- If you modify it and let others use it over a network — section 13, the reason this is the Affero license and not the plain GPL — those users must be offered the complete source of the version you are running.
- Running it unmodified for yourself, your team or your company triggers none of that. Internal use is simply use.
- The documents you index are yours. The license covers Contextator's own code, not your content, and an AI client talking to
/mcp/…does not become a derivative work of it. - No warranty, no liability. See the Terms of Use.
This summary is a convenience, not a substitute: only the full text is the license.

The complete source of this program is available at contextator.com/source. If you are running a modified version of Contextator yourself, section 13 asks you to point this line at your own — and if you are using someone else's modified version, ask them for it: the license entitles you to it.
Commercial license
The AGPL does not fit every situation: some companies forbid it by policy, and some products cannot publish the source of what they ship. Because Muhammet Şafak holds the copyright of Contextator in full, a separate commercial license can be granted for those cases, on terms agreed in writing and without the source-disclosure obligations of sections 5, 6 and 13.
This is an offer of an alternative, never a restriction of the AGPL: the free license above stands on its own and nothing is being held back from it. Ask at tunedness.com.
Third-party components
Contextator stands on other people's work. Each component keeps its own license, and those licenses apply to those components — not to Contextator itself. All of them are permissive and compatible with the AGPL:
| Component | Used for | License |
|---|---|---|
| Fastify | HTTP server | MIT |
@fastify/cookie | the dashboard's session cookie | MIT |
@modelcontextprotocol/sdk | MCP transports and server | MIT |
| PostgreSQL · pgvector | storage and vector search | PostgreSQL License |
pg | PostgreSQL client | MIT |
| Drizzle ORM | schema and queries | Apache-2.0 |
transformers.js (@huggingface/transformers) | local embeddings | Apache-2.0 |
| OpenAI Node SDK | optional hosted embeddings | Apache-2.0 |
@notionhq/client | Notion sync | MIT |
| isomorphic-git | git clone and fetch | MIT |
node-stream-zip · node-unrar-js | archive extraction | MIT |
tar | tar and tar.gz extraction | BlueOak-1.0.0 |
| Zod | request and config validation | MIT |
picomatch | glob matching | MIT |
dotenv | environment loading | BSD-2-Clause |
| IBM Plex Sans · IBM Plex Mono · Instrument Serif | typefaces | SIL Open Font License 1.1 |
The default embedding model is downloaded from Hugging Face at first start and is covered by the license stated on its model card, not by this one. The authoritative license of any dependency is the one shipped in its own package; the table above is a map, not a warranty.
A machine-readable list of every transitive dependency and its license is available from a checkout with
npm ls --all or any SBOM tool of your choice.
